Looking for a low-cost, convenient workout that relieves arthritis pain? All you have to do is put one foot in front of the other. “Walk­ ing has a wide range of benefits,” says Hiral Master, a physical therapist, and researcher at the University of Delaware. “It does every­ thing from build muscle and strengthen bones to improve your heart health.”

Walking is also low­impact, so it’s an excel­ lent option for people with arthritis, adds Corey Feger, a physical therapist in Louisville, Kentucky. It increases blood flow and the production of synovial fluid, which lubricates the joints, helping to ease stiffness and pain.

Even a few minutes of walking a day can deliver benefits, says Master. Here are four more reasons to start stepping.
