Autoimmune types of arthritis not only take a toll on your joints, they also can impact your bones. Inflammation related to types of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and lupus may contribute to bone loss, upping your odds of osteoporosis. On top of that, corticosteroids that are sometimes used to treat these conditions can cause significant bone loss, too.

However, recent research shows that some people with the highest risk for osteoporosis aren’t receiving the treatment they need to prevent bone fractures.
