What was the first thing that ran through your minds when you first heard of the measures taken to curb the virus e.g. Social distance, circuit breakers? Why did you feel that way?

This is a situation that I believe not many people have ever experienced before. My immediate thoughts were what would happen to my daily routine, whether it be my personal or workplace routine. I was also concerned about the changes that I would need to make and the challenges that my team and I would need to face.

Almost at the same time, I was contacted by our Human Resources and Business Contingency team. They briefed us on the measures that our company has implemented across Southeast Asia and India to maximize business continuity and safeguarding employees’ safety.

We started with a split team arrangement and eventually fully working from home. Through these changes, while many were worried that work would be disrupted; I realized that we had the right level of capabilities and experiences to navigate through successfully as a team.

The Singapore branch of this business is a part of the international market, with ties to offices in Europe, America, Asia, and others. With the various government measures being input in the different regional offices, how have your colleagues in the overseas markets been coping?

We have a global policy which is implemented following local regulation. It was certainly not easy for our colleagues in Europe, but we started the process, prepared for it, and we didn’t underestimate the problem since it first started here in Asia.

To get a sense of Chef Aeron Choo’s work ethic as well as personality, we first have to tell the story of meeting her for the first time in her restaurant, Kappou Japanese Sushi Tapas Bar at Fortune Center. She’s working with her kitchen team, scrutinising the ingredients she has prepared, making sure that the slices of tuna she has made is up to scratch, prepping and discarding elements that she is dissatisfied with that don’t work with the dishes. Then, she pulls out a 1.7kg spiny lobster, fresh from the tank, and very much alive. When the lobster is clearly flailing from being yanked out of the tank it had been swimming in, she takes time to stroke, pet the lobster and whisper sweet nothings to calm the creature down.
