When red-carpet glamour doesn’t cost an arm and a leg
A GRADUATE OF Central Saint Martin, Malaysian-born Han Chong started his own fashion label Self-Portrait only three years ago but the publicity he has gotten so far is nothing short of amazing. The Princess of Duchess wore one of his creations — a long white bodice dress with pleated skirt and a side slit — just last year and Hollywood darlings Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Biel, Lucy Hale and Kirsten Stewart are also fans of his work. His designs are so popular that even online retailers Bergdorf Goodman and Net-a-Porter are carrying his line. Not too shabby for a relatively new label. Style:’s digital curator Debbie Kate Loo caught up with him when he was here to showcase his Spring/ Summer 2017 collection during Singapore Fashion Week last year
This is your first-ever runway show and you’re showing it at Singapore Fashion Week 2016. Why now?
I never thought of doing a runway show before but three seasons ago, I said to myself: “Why not try it out?” So we started doing presentations because we wanted to have intimate contact with editors. This year, I feel that the collection has got the right attitude and the pieces look nice on models in movement so I decided to stage a runway show this season.
