Forget about looking for happiness in your job; experts say meaning is what matters. And finding it isn’t as hard as it sounds – if you know where to look
How often do you lose yourself in work without interruptions such as urgent emails from your boss or demands for updates from colleagues? When was the last time you sat down and completed a task (and relished ticking it off your to-do list) without having to break off for a meeting or reply to a ping from your phone?
This state of being fully present and engaged in a single activity is known as ‘flow’. In this state, nothing exists except the doing. Time stops. You lose all sense of self. You are challenged to the upper limit of your skills but not beyond. Whatever you are doing becomes effortless and more enjoyable.
This is the state that athletes enter when they are at the peak of their sport, that artists and musicians experience when they are simply lost in creating.
Today’s positive psychologists agree that creating more flow experiences in your life is a definite way to push your positivity higher.
