When a supermodel and a movie star fall in love, the odds aren’t always in their favour. Brooke Le Poer Trench asks Ed Burns and Christy Turlington Burns the secret to their success

DREAM TEAM

When Christy Turlington and Ed Burns fell for one another two decades ago, it was a match made in zeitgeist heaven. Even now, the prospect of talking to them sends my inner 20-something’s heart racing. After all, she was the supermodel who closed Versace shows and rocked out in George Michael’s “Freedom” music video; he was the actor and director behind cult-indie film The Brothers McMullen (which I watched 6000 times). In case you weren’t across it 20 years ago, a brief romantic history: In 2000, the pair met at a party in the Hamptons, and by the end of the year they were engaged. After a brief split in 2002, they reunited and tied the knot in 2003.

The reason this private couple are even talking to me is because they are the face of Calvin Klein’s latest Eternity fragrance campaign, which sees the youthful pair looking loved-up on a remote beach. Turlington Burns starred in the first Eternity campaign in 1988, with Burns later joining her as face of the fragrance. What that means, for me, is carte blanche to discuss the secret to a lasting romance.
