“I hated the person that I was. I hated the way I looked. I hated the way I felt,” reveals a very candid and unhinged Mond Gutierrez in an interview with social news network, Rappler. Beads of sweat have coalesced to form streams streaking down his face, which showed visible exhaustion betrayed by a piercing, fired up gaze. “I had the tendency to be negative. I felt like I had no love inside me.”

Hate is such a strong word to throw around, even more so when it is directed at the self. Even in its singular syllable form, it has the immense power to render a person to deflated nothingness. It can destroy even the strongest and most assured, which is why it is a word that trembles at the lips. He is steadfast and sure of it, which come to think of it is quite unnerving. But this isn’t your typical brandishing of a word. This was a fulcrum where his comfortable balance would be challenged to a pivot. A decision was made, there was no turning back. Change was going to come, he was sure of it.

Without so much as flinching, Mond Gutierrez drops the F bomb, “I am sick of being fat.” Boom, there it is.

EXCUSES , EXCUSES

“I’m scared to go on a weighing scale,” admits Mond. “I don’t own one at home. Maybe I should have, actually.” One would assume that for someone who is a regular fixture on television, on the nightlife scene and just about on anything that is hip, happening and of-the-moment, that there exists an intense self-critical voice in him—one that would question, doubt and nit-pick everything, especially on the surface level. But contrary to popular belief, Mond Gutierrez is never overly critical of himself, mostly because if he did so, he would obsess over it—just like the aforementioned non-existence of a weighing scale. “I never went on it in fear of being too obsessed with it.”

GOOD LEADERSHIP

GOOD LEADERSHIP

I’ve been an employee and a business owner for nearly two decades now and during one of the long nights of 2020, I asked myself, “What kind of leader do I want to be?” This is a question that can easily be answered by, “I want to be a good leader.” But the truth is, it is so difficult to even come close to good. You see, many if not all of our jobs is a business, a business that has to keep spending at bay, one that has to increase profits year over year, and one that has to keep workers happy and motivated. Those things are polar opposites of one another and to find the perfect middle is challenging. For months, I’ve mulled over my own question and I think I’ve found the answer. I want to be that leader that inspires personal growth.

BE HAPPY

BE HAPPY

Two months ago, I was announced as the head of One Mega Group, a position previously held by our late Founder, Sari Yap, and then our current Chairman, Archie Carasco. Full disclosure, I knew about this announcement six months ago at the height of the pandemic. When I was told, I laughed. I wasn’t sure if it was a nervous laughter, an amused chuckle or both. I honestly thought it was a prank that would be revealed seconds later, but it wasn’t.
