A marquis, with his own castle in the French Pyrenees, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac is not one to stay in his ivory tower. A designer for over 50 years, he pioneered the use of cartoons as prints, made a coat out of teddy bears that was once worn by Madonna, and collaborated with artists such as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Since last year, the founder of labels such as Iceberg and Sportmax, has taken on the role of artistic director at Italian high-street reliable Benetton. Right after his Spring 2020 show in Milan, the designer sat down with Bazaar to talk about his inspirations, sustainability, and why he’s a shaman with colour.

To start with, tell us about the Spring 2020 show.
