A weekend car is like a weekend house. It’s fun, it’s liberating, it breaks up the mundanity of the everyday. It can also be a little frustrating. Once the rush of endorphins wears off after a while, it’s not something you want to indulge in every day. You’ll crave all your creature comforts.
A two-seater roadster convertible is definitely a weekend kind of car. You could say driving one is like having an affair — it’s exhilarating and heady, but it’s also a bumpy ride ahead (no double entendre intended). BMW’s long-anticipated new generation of Z4 is a fine weekend car. I always think two-seaters attract the clichéd customer base of hot young things wanting to attract similarly hot young things, and empty-nesters wanting fabulous weekends away and to send their kids a message to bugger off.
I am in neither of those categories, so this is not a car for me. I did, however, have a fun weekend of pretence with the Z4.
