The Real Reason Why Sexual Harassment Go Unreported

Positive thinker might think that negative thinking might lead to undesirable outcomes. But what is been reported or emphasised in the news these days is terrible and frightening. Every day news suggests how many women are being abused around the world. The news reports also suggest that how so many turn a blind eye towards women abuse issues and are still getting worse. The people turning their blind eyes show a definite support to continuation of abuse by not taking a stand to speak up or fight against it. This is not only frightening but also reveals the magnitude of prevailing societal issue that should no longer be ignored. The top most issue in women abasement is sexual assault.

Sexual assault is a term that includes sexual harassment, unwanted sexual contact, child sexual abuse, incest and rape. Sexual contact becomes assault when a person is unable to or does not give a consent to that sexual contact or activity. But this definition excludes marital rape, same sex crimes and sex with a minor below the age of sixteen as rape. According to the available data rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India. According to NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau) annual report of year 2013, there were 24,923 rape cases were reported across India in the year 2012.

Out of these, 24,470 cases were committed by a known person to the victim i.e. 98% of the cases involved perpetrators known to the victims. Recent data suggests that more than five rape cases being reported on an average every day in the national capital in 2017. A total of 2,049 rape cases, 3,273 molestation cases and 894 cases of eve teasing cases were reported in 2017 which is opposed to 2,064 rape cases, 4,035 molestation cases and 621 cases of eve teasing cases were reported in 2016 (according to the statistics given by Delhi police).

Modern day romance The hook up culture

A hook up culture is one of casual dating which may or may not lead to a long term commitment. Messaging and phoning is rampant and to hook up a few conversations gets you into physical intimacy and contact. Talk over a cup of tea makes for a date. Earlier couples used to merit company through the family social circle or a group of friends. Now with the internet boom, social media and Facebook, dating sites have taken over. The individual has become a commodity. A branded site or just an advertisement for various products does the trick. It has become a point of ridicule that dating comes on a mobile app, and true love has indeed become a shopper’s delight. A hook up syndrome has led to a cultural change; just swiping a card and you get a pretty girl to date.
