Having The World At His Feet
His fancy footwear is favoured by the well-heeled the world over but despite his fame and recognition, Italian Designer Giuseppe Zanotti is as grounded as they come. He talks to Sarah Hani Jamil about his spring/summer 2020 collection in the living room of his swanky home in Milan over tea and pastries.

It’s not every day that I can say that I’ve been invited to an international fashion designer’s house. But for the Milan Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2020 last September, I was. As a precursor to the Giuseppe Zanotti presentation that was set to take place at the brand’s flagship store at one of the most glamorous shopping streets in the world, Via Monte Napoleone, I was given the opportunity to visit the design maestro’s luxurious home. I was nervous, of course, but Giuseppe was a gracious host, even offering a tray of pastries and tea for our chat. We sat down on the plush couch in his living room and my interview started with him showing me a portfolio of sketches from his latest collection.

“This is Spring/Summer 2020. We show to the worldwide press tomorrow and the collection is simply beautiful! The inspiration comes from nature with different kinds of flowers as the focus. One of it is a sandal that features a huge, adjustable leather lily that you can also use to cover the feet. We had something similar last season, which was the peony. I imagine wearing it with a simple dress so that the beautiful flower takes centre stage,” shares Giuseppe. “The whole collection features mostly metallic tones, but there’s also suede in brown, red and black thrown into the mix. Femininity is the key word I’d use cos in this collection, there are a lot of feminine details. I started my career with jewels so you will see that there are a lot of crystal accessories like the heel with the bow. It’s part of my DNA.”
