AFTER SCENE-STEALING PERFORMANCES IN CRAZY RICH ASIANS AND MANIAC, SONOYA MIZUNO HAS SCORED HER FIRST LEAD ROLE – AND IS ON THE BRINK OF SUPERSTARDOM
Brianna Kovan
STREAMING: all the right moves

Sonoya Mizuno has been, how can I put this... “shat” upon. Some leaky sparrow shit, to be precise, which sits centre stage on her navy trousers. It’s a warm morning, and we’re seated outside a cafe in New York’s East Village. As the 33-year-old actor quietly excuses herself to clean up in the bathroom with a good-natured shrug, the feathered culprit dances around us. “It’s supposed to be good luck, right?” she asks.

Many will remember Mizuno as the bride in Crazy Rich Asians, which raked in $350 million worldwide at the box office, making it the highest-grossing romantic comedy of the past 10 years. Or perhaps you’ll recall her as one of the dancing roommates in Damien Chazelle’s La La Land. Or the awkward, chainsmoking Dr Azumi Fujita in Netflix’s sci-fi extravaganza Maniac, in which she starred alongside Jonah Hill and Emma Stone.
