How an impossible dream of friends and influencers Richard Juan and Janina Manipol turned into the trip of a lifetime.
When you think of the Maldives, you think of an ultra luxurious destination for two that you might be able to afford in the next lifetime. Or, in ex-Pinoy Big Brother housemate, model, and vlogger Richard Juan’s words, “It’s like Atlantis—so unreachable, it doesn’t even exist.” Additionally, you don’t necessarily think of it as “a barkada destination to cross off the bucket list before your 30s,” says model and videographer Janina Manipol, Richard’s frequent travel buddy and co-founder of travel group Where Are They Now (a.k.a. #WATNow). But that’s exactly what they did a few months ago, along with influencer friends Patrice Averilla, Cha Ocampo, and 2017 Cosmo Bachelor Bret Maverick. From simply joking about creating travel content in the Maldives, the group’s combined effort of looking for airline and accommodation contacts and deals led them to the pristine white beaches in the middle of the Indian Ocean. While the Maldives is not exactly a destination for penny-pinching, these travel buddies did discover that it is a modern-day Atlantis, a picturesque paradise that exceeds all expectations.
