LOOKING GOOD is very much part of the scene in some industries and none are more familiar than the crew at Zouk, Singapore’s iconic dancehall. “When one works in a club, it does help to be conscious of one’s dressing,” says Wayne Lee, the club’s assistant general manager. Deejay booker, Byden Lian concurs: “The environment, the clubbers and what they’re wearing, compels you to keep up.”Even the most flamboyant of the fantastic four, DJ Zushan feels the pervasive influence of the “scene” on one’s dress style, and it is a double-edged sword. He explains: “It’s an industry where I can wear anything.” But without limits, comes the mounting pressure to keep experimenting and stay fresh in one’s self expression. It requires due diligence, thought and planning behind what she wears to work daily, says Sofie Chandra, Zouk’s head front-liner for marketing and events. But the job and exposure to music and the arts has honed her sense of style over time. “It’s something that definitely can be cultivated, not something that you’re just born with,” she says.
