Donald Trump warned this week that he was ready to tackle the nuclear threat from North Korea with or without help from China.
Heightening fears of an armed conflict, the US president, in an interview with the Financial Times, said that if China – Pyongyang’s only regional ally – was unwilling to use its influence to “solve North Korea, we will”. Trump’s comments follow an acceleration of Kim Jong Un’s nuclear weapons programme, and claims that North Korea may soon have ballistic missiles capable of hitting targets on the US mainland (see page 13).
