'It Was Our Job To Shake The Box A Little Bit'

Rian Johnson looks back on The Last Jedi and ahead to his new trilogy…

“I’m just starting to figure out what it’s going to be,” says Rian Johnson on the news that he will be working on a brand-new trilogy of Star Wars movies, totally separate from the main films, that will introduce new characters. He continues saying: “The possibilities of it and the idea of telling one story over three movies with the only goal being to capture what Star Wars feels like to you, that’s pretty thrilling.”

On the future of the Star Wars universe it’s great news that Johnson has been given the keys to the kingdom to create something new. After all, his work on The Last Jedi was exhilarating and went to surprising places that gained critical acclaim but triggered some negative responses from fans. On the response to his film Johnson states: “I was thrilled with the reaction and even the degree to which people were arguing about the movie and talking about it. Having grown up as a Star Wars fan I guess I’m familiar with that. I know that any Star Wars movie and any Star Wars movie that tries something that people perhaps weren’t expecting is going to generate a lot of passion and conversation. It’s not like you ever want to upset people but I took it as a very good sign that it generated the kind of range it did.
