ADDING SMART LIGHTING to your AV room, lounge or, well, anywhere in your house is an enticing idea. For years the smartest thing you could with your light setup was install a dimmer switch. No, you can cycle through colours, run automated scenes, sync to audio-visual sources and use your smartphone as a controller.
Nanoleaf, a 2012 startup with an ambition 'to shake up the lighting industry', doesn't yet have the product range to rival the likes of Philips Hue, but its wares do have appeal, not least because its installations are scalable, and able to fit anywhere. Also, while some smart lighting systems aim for discretion, with LED strips tucked under furniture and bulbs residing in lamps, Nanoleaf's products are designed to be seen.
In the £90 Canvas Smarter Kit auditioned here you get just enough to enjoy a taste of what a larger Nanoleaf setup might involve – and enough to light up a corner/ area of your room.
The kit includes four Canvas light panels, a discreet power cable to connect to one of them, and connectors that link one panel to the next; an array of contact points gives you flexibility as to the pattern you want to make.
