One of the most ancient Hindu festivals, Navratri is celebrated with great devotion by Indians the world over. Sindhis, too, celebrate it with total commitment, welcoming the divine mother Durga into their homes. They not only sing her praises and plant jowar seeds, but also celebrate with a Mata Ki Chowki. It’s a time for religious rituals like fasting and also singing and dancing the Garba. Typically, the festival’s nine nights are dedicated to different aspects of the divine feminine principle of Shakti.
Reveling in the spirit of Navratri that is essentially a celebration of good over evil, actress Shweta Rohira shared with us outtakes from a shoot for the Bhakti World App, an online devotional platform that featured her in the different avatars of the Goddess Durga.
“When they explained the concept to me, I was very excited about portraying the different looks of the nine Goddesses, as my family has always been big on celebrating Navratri. Ever since I was a child, I have always loved the many forms of Maa Durga. Also, it is during this time that I get to hear my family sing the bhajan of Maa Hinglaj and the Sindhi pallo that my naani recites after each aarti.”
