What’s the difference between fashion and style? In a nutshell, style is timeless, fashion is timely. Fashion is what is offered up each season, style is what we choose. Fashion is collective whereas style is personal.
We all know those perfectly polished people who ooze elegance and always manage to look fabulous. But style doesn’t have to be expensive or consume our time. Style takes something else, something less tangible than the right label at the right time.
Whether you are a perennial minimalist or a fearless chameleon it’s that innate ability to know what to buy without overbuying. Buy less, buy better, seek out pieces that have the power to transcend trends.
There’s no doubt that our style evolves over time. It’s a lifelong project that adapts to the different stages of life. So, we set ourselves a mission to find five leading ladies who love, live and shop in Surrey and who encapsulate the very best of Surrey style…
SURREY FRILLS STYLING NOTES :
These impeccably cut silver trousers are designed to sit flatteringly high on the waist while elongating the frame. We’ve paired them with a Bardot top in mint green that perfectly flatters Laura’s coloring. Watch Laura on the latest series of A Place in the Sun weekdays at 4pm on Channel 4 and follow her on Instagram and Twitter @laurahamiltontv
As host of Channel Four’s A Place in the Sun, Laura Hamilton has travelled all over the world but there’s no place like home.
Four years ago, Laura rescued her local post office and village store, combining it with an independent restaurant, coffee shop and deli. Lord Roberts on the Green has become a much-loved community hub offering local artisan produce. Whether she’s on the red carpet, sunshine location or school run, Laura is always effortlessly elegant and stylishly chic.
“I think it’s really important to make a good first impression,” says Laura. “Since I’ve got older, I’ve become better at styling myself. I believe you can have a designer look without designer prices.”
For TV, Laura likes to dress in colorful, chic, and feminine clothes that embrace her popular appeal.
“My favorite fashion era is the 1950s,” she says. That decade saw fashion explode into new directions, new shapes, shades, and high-octane glamour. The hourglass silhouettes and Bardot necklines compliment Laura’s petite but shapely frame.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that exStrictly Come Dancing champion, Flavia Cacace-Mistry has a penchant for sequins and spangles. But away from her glittering dance career, Flavia has a refreshingly cool and edgy sense of style. “I don’t tend to follow trends,” she says. “I like unique and unusual pieces that stand out.”
To add interest, Flavia likes to wear asymmetrical, halter, and off-the-shoulder necklines. Colors are important too. “As I’ve got older, I’ve become more aware of the power of color and how certain colors can have an uplifting effect on your mood,” she says.
“I am drawn towards blue and I love charcoal grey.”
Flavia’s love of dance and fitness means she has plenty of gym-fit inspiration – crop tops to show off her enviable abs and comfy leggings. When walking her beloved cockapoos Zak and Pablo, Flavia opts for casual/ smart clothing with every Surrey fashionista’s favourite – Hunter original grass green wellies!
