21 Things To Do In Somerset His Summer

1. GO CANOEING

Hire a boat or go kayaking on the Bridgwater to Taunton Canal. This 14-mile long waterway links the two towns and is popular with walkers, fishermen, canoeists, and kayakers. Higher Maunsel Lock is a good starting point as you can hire a boat or kayak from the Somerset Boat Centre and, not too far away, the Maunsel Lock tearooms offer well-deserved cake and refreshments for a post paddle treat – check for coronavirus latest, it was restricted to a weekend takeaway service.

2. BUILD A SANDCASTLE

Whether in self-isolation, or part of a family group, building sandcastles is a timeless activity that is guaranteed to appeal to every generation. Rather like the current lockdown trend for jigsaws, there’s something deeply satisfying about digging and patting down sand and making these transitory creations. Weston-super-Mare is without doubt the place to do it. Not only does it have miles of sandy beach, but it also hosts the world-famous Sand Sculpture Festival. Of course, it’s canceled for this year, but there’s no reason why you can’t get some practice in for next year’s event.

3.GO FOR PICNIC

There’s simply too much choice in Somerset, but if a stunning backdrop is a picnic-must then how about a visit to Deer Leap on the Mendip Hills? Find it by taking the road to Priddy from Wookey Hole village. This must be the best view in the county; you can gaze out across the wide expanse of the Somerset Levels while tucking into sandwiches and crisps. Before you leave look for signs of the abandoned medieval farmstead - a barn and collapsed ash tree mark the spot.
