Road Trip!

1 For the ultimate cake-and-caffeine fix: MANNA – BETTER CAKE AND COFFEE (Nieu-Bethesda, Eastern Cape)

Most people head to Nieu-Bethesda to feast their eyes on Helen Martins’ famous Owl House, but there’s plenty of reason to also pop in at André du Toit’s house, just a stone’s throw away. He serves freshly baked cakes and croissants and the best coffee in town – only on Sundays and public holidays from 9 am to 2 pm. We enjoyed some of his moist Sicilian lemon cake under the pear trees in his backyard (and couldn’t resist chocolate croissants for takeaways), but we’re told you shouldn’t miss the Black Forest cake, which he only serves on the first Sunday of every month. Go early if you want to have your cake and eat it too. 437 Pienaar Street, tel: 072 636 9167; facebook.com/karoomanna

2 For the fruits of the sea: LANGTAFEL OP DIE DUIN (Langebaan, Western Cape)

Cookbook author Isabella Niehaus has the privilege of living on a dune right at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean and Langebaan lagoon. Every so often she opens up her house, sets a long table and cooks real West Coast food: always a huge oyster platter to start, followed by several courses starring the likes of yellowtail, mussels and kabeljou, with the freshest vegetables and a decadent dessert. And when you’re done, sit back and watch the ships and yachts and surfers on the water. Expect beautiful crockery, beautiful art, beautiful people, beautiful food and beautiful wine. But the most beautiful of them all is Isabella’s soul. You’ll taste it on your plate. Check her Facebook page for dates and themes. 24 Casos Road, Calypso Beach, tel: 083 265 2147; facebook.com/ Duinhuis

3 For seasonal surprises from near and far: LOKAL IN B’BOS (Baardskeerdersbos, Western Cape)
