Marriage Story is having its moment this awards season, but that attention is nothing compared to the spotlight leading man Adam Driver has found himself under lately.

Critics have been raving about the 36-year-old actor’s emotionally raw performance in the drama, which tells the story of theatre director Charlie (Driver) and his actress wife Nicole’s (Scarlett Johansson) heartbreaking divorce.

Driver’s acting – and one powerfully realistic fight scene in particular – earned him a Golden Globe nod, an accolade that has been a decade in the making.

“You don’t push for emotion. It either happens or it doesn’t,” Driver told The Hollywood Reporter.

Critics are calling this the year of Adam Driver, after his impressive turn as an FBI agent trying to bring down corruption in The Report, charismatic but flawed Charlie in Marriage Story and villain Kylo Ren in blockbuster Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.

It’s a big leap from where the actor was a year ago, when he was nominated for an Oscar for BlacKkKlansman and still flew relatively under the radar.
