Frankie Dettori may be the world’s leading jockey, but he’s no polo player. It’s something he’s acutely aware of as he prepares to saddle up for the Pacific Fair Magic Millions Polo on January 5. “I’ve never played polo before,” the 49-year-old Italian says. “I know I can do the riding, but I don’t know how I’m going to go hitting a ball at the same time!” Surely, it’s as easy as, um, falling off a horse.

The winner of more than 500 Group Races, Dettori is one of the big drawcards at this year’s The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Carnival. He will captain Team Ferrari (of course) and face off against rival jockey, Aussie Hugh Bowman, at the polo. “I’m always chasing new experiences, so it’s going to be a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to matching up against Hugh Bowman. It’s going to be hot and as an Italian I need the heat!”
