Taking a time out
After four years as sassy seductress Yvonne Langa, actress Kgomotso Christopher takes a break from the soapie

Just when the pieces in Yvonne Thebe-Langa’s (Kgomotso Christopher) life were falling into place, she receives an international phonecall. “It’s an emergency – and she needs to leave now,” says Kgomotso. Viewers will have to wait to see what exactly happens in that moment as Yvonne’s world comes to a grinding halt. She recently confessed her undying feelings for good-guy cop Lerumo (Tshepo Mosese). Not to forget that she’s just adopted 10-year-old Tebello (Litlhonolofatso Litlhakanyane). Who is she possibly going to leave him with after she spent months convincing his social worker that she’s the perfect candidate to take care of the child? Yvonne finds herself in a tricky position. “The old and very much selfish Yvonne wouldn’t have thought twice about it. She would have stayed in the country, ignoring the call for help. But after spending time as Tebello’s guardian, Yvonne has learnt to put others ahead of herself. She decides to put her life behind her and leave,” says Kgomotso.

Just like that, Yvonne packs her bags, bids a farewell to her loved ones and takes off on Tuesday 2 June. “She is sad to leave Tebello all alone, but Lerumo vows to take care of him. They’re teary-eyed and emotional, it’s heart-breaking. Rest assured though, this isn’t a goodbye but a see you soon,” reveals the actress who is taking a break to seek other acting opportunities.

A CHANGE OF SCENERY

While it was announced that Kgomotso was leaving Scandal! in March this year, she had already been in talks with the producers to exit the soapie in late 2019. She was ready to venture out and try her luck at portraying other characters. Whether that is on a telenovela, a series or even presenting a reality show. “Yvonne has been a supporting character for the past two years, which means that she isn’t always in the main storylines. As a result, I have time on my hands, but I can’t use any of those off-days to seek out other acting roles because of contractual obligations. It’s a double-edge sword. I absolutely love playing Yvonne, but on the other hand, I’d like to feed my creativity,” adds Kgomotso. The Scandal! producers understood her position and together they came to an agreement for her to take a break from her role.
