When, in 2017, Rose McGowan publicly accused movie producer Harvey Weinstein of raping her two decades earlier, she had no idea if her brave words would bring about justice or simply go unheard. In fact, she was one of the women who helped spark the #MeToo movement and changed Hollywood forever.
Rose followed with a speech at the Women’s Convention in Detroit and encouraged other victims to come forward, saying, “No more will we be hurt. It’s time to rise. It’s time to be brave.”
Back in March, after being found guilty of one count of third degree rape and one count of a criminal sexual act, the man she dubbed “The Monster”, began his 23-year sentence in a New York prison.
Rose, 46, who was raised by her parents in the Children of God cult, says she is still healing from her ordeal. She also regrets calling Natalie Portman a fraud for wearing a ‘protest’ dress to this year’s Oscars which took a swipe at the lack of female directors.
Turning her back on acting, Rose has plans to repeat the success of her autobiography Brave and has released a sing-speak album Planet 9, which relates to the “utopian world in my mind” that she escaped to as a child.
From her current lockdown location in the jungle of Coba, in Mexico, the Charmed star reveals her response to Harvey Weinstein’s conviction, how she broke down ahead of the trial and why she’s finally “at peace”...
How do you feel now that Harvey Weinstein is behind bars?
