Family Secrets: The Khan Family Cookbook has been three years in the making...
I come from a Parsi background where food is the thing in our lives, so my grandmother used to always put good food on the table and make sure it was well-laid. And then I went into this Muslim family where food was a form of bonding for the family. I met my future husband (Sanjay Khan) when I was only fourteen when we were neighbours. I met him through my mother-in-law Bibi Fatima Begum Khan. She would wave to me every time I went to school very sweetly. Years later when we started courting, every time I would go to her house there used to be this fabulous fragrance of cooking. And being a sportsperson myself with a good appetite, I would wallop it all. She would love cooking for me especially and I would love eating it. One day I started noting down the recipes along with the Parsi dishes from my house, and then years later had it neatly typed in a copy book that I would gift to all my children on their birthdays. It was my legacy to them.
Your home parties have been legendary for their delicious home-cooked food. What made you decide to finally come out with a cookbook?
At a dinner for Sussanne, one of her friends urged me to write a cookbook— they loved the food so much. And then my other kids also jumped in, egging me on. And that’s how the book came to be. It’s very simple cooking—we don’t use all those oils and packaged masalas. I remember the King of Morocco had once come home and he just loved the biryani— said he had the best evening of his life.
They say cooking can be therapeutic too...
