A connoisseur of antiquarian books and art from all over the world, Akshay Chudasama’s journey as a collector may have begun two decades ago but seems to have taken a contemporary turn, lately. A case in point are the works displayed in his Malabar Hill studio apartment – a combination of photographs, drawings, paintings, wall installations and threedimensional works. “I tend to display more of my contemporary work than my older works,” shares Akshay as he gives us a tour of the tastefully done up space.
A handmade woollen carpet titled Step Inside by Azerbaijani artist Faig Ahmed dominates a wall in Chudasama’s apartment, “The carpet is flat, but when you look at it from a distance it looks three-dimensional,” he says encouraging me to feel the texture of the artwork. An interesting white work by Balasubramanium keeps wall installations by Seher Shah and Indian-English artist Prem Sahib company, alongside a large work by Nalini Malani “who deals with life and death in an extremely interesting manner,” he says leading towards other prominent works by Bharti Kher, Atul Dodiya and KG Subramanium.
