ON MY FIRST DAY OF WORK AT ESQUIRE IN THE FALL of 1990, I was told to look through back issues of the magazine to get a sense of its history.

The first story I read was by a guy named Stanley Bing. His column was about the death of his beloved cocker spaniel and as a dog lover— specifically a spaniel lover—I found myself sobbing at my brand new desk. (Not a great look.)
