Time, of course, is the perfect catalyst for change and this was proven during November’s Only Watch charity auction in Geneva where a special one-off Tudor timepiece fetched a staggering CHF350,000 (US$351,000) on the auction block. Not bad for a watch brand that was created to be an affordable alternative to a Rolex.

Understanding Tudor’s cult-like resurgence requires a quick walk down memory lane. It all started in 1926 when Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex watches, co-registered the Tudor name with Swiss watchmaking company Veuve de Philippe Hüther.

The goal was simple: to preserve Rolex’s rich reputation for quality watchmaking in an affordable timepiece. The watchmaker achieved this through the use of off-the-shelf movements paired with Rolex cases and bracelets. This ensured the ideal balance of reliability without compromising on affordability.
