Three Women Entreprenuers: Riding Male Bastions to Make their Mark
SME World|March 2020
The globalisation has truly ushered us in the golden age throwing a sea of opportunities. With technology ruling the roost, we see an onset of revolution in entrepreneurship. With digitisation and startup boom, more and more women entrepreneurs are beginning to hold the centre-stage.
Three Women Entreprenuers: Riding Male Bastions to Make their Mark

The sixth economic census by Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) highlights that women constitute around 14% of the total entrepreneurship in India. Today's women entrepreneurs do not come only from the established business families or from the higher-income sections of the population, they come from all walks of life and from all parts of the country.

Be it media, construction, infrastructure, architecture, legal, films, security, finance – more and more women are flying against the winds to ride bastions traditionally held by the males.

With constant development in the Indian business ecosystem especially in the service sector, more and more women are taking to the entrepreneurial journey and succeeding resulting in the empowerment of those who are still confined to the traditional homemaker role to think for themselves. However, a recent report states that only two Indian cities have made it to a ranking of the 50 most favourable global places for women to work. India's Silicon Valley, Bengaluru ranked 40th, while came in at Delhi the 49th place.

It is a confirmed belief that a society where women cannot realise their full potential loses out on the significant potential for innovation, economic growth, and job creation. Studies have revealed that in India, measures to narrow the gender gap could lead to a 6.8-percent gain in GDP and estimated that advancing women's equality in India could boost its GDP by $0.7 trillion in 2025 or 16 percent as compared to the 'business as usual' scenario. Moreover, entrepreneurship remains critical to harness the economic potential of women and thus, achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs) by 2030.
