Opines Francois Vazille,Oracle Utilities Vice President, in an interview with Monica Chaturvedi Charna on the sidelines of the India Smart Grid Week event...
India is currently abuzz with topics like smart grids, IoT integration, etc. in Indian utilities. How do you see the entire environment including the government’s push to smart technologies, customers’ awareness and the preparedness for implementing smart grids in the country.
The government has strong plans to push utilities to evolve and change. The most revolutionary initiatives are UDAY, smart and sustainable grids and the renewable energy target of 175 GW by 2022, all of which will have a strong impact on smart grid implementation.
The key elements of smart grid technology are application of internet of things technology – smart sensors, two-way communication, and analytics. Analytics is what will make the biggest difference in the smart grid infrastructure. Demand-side management is a very important path in reducing the aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses when implemented in conjuction with the smart grid technology. In addition, the smart grid data should be able to give a better understanding of the consumer’s usage of power which comes under supply planning. It will also give an understanding of how to integrate renewable energy into the grid.
The Indian government is actively investing in smart grid technologies, especially in smart meters and going forward, the utilities will be flooded with huge amount of data. This is when the system will become complex so the utilities will have to be equiped with technologies to use the analytics. The key elements that it will address are cutting down the outages and reducing the cost of maintaining the grid.
What measures are required to be adopted by the utilities to reap the benefits of analytics?
