Performance recording in small stock: Part 2
Farmer's Weekly|August 21, 2020
Incorporating record-keeping in your flock management requires planning and dedication, but the benefits will prove invaluable.
Performance recording in small stock: Part 2

As mentioned in last week’s article (FW, 14 August), performance recording and analysis of the results are excellent selection and management aids, helping you identify more efficient, higher-producing animals, and thereby increasing profitability. Records of births and pedigrees, as well as meaningful performance records, are essential for estimating genetic potential and selecting genetically superior animals for continual improvement.

A breeder must be a paid member of the relevant breed society as well as SA Stud Book to participate in growth tests. The animal’s age and weight should be between set limits in order to compare animals fairly.

• Age at the start of a test Between four and six months (120 to 180 days) for an extensive test, and between three and five months (90 to 150 days) for an intensive test.

• Age difference Not more than two months (60 days).
