This has led to a global plastic pollution crisis that poses a serious threat to countless ecosystems. In light of this crisis, the food and beverage industry has been exploring more sustainable packaging options. The dairy industry is no exception – it is increasingly faced with the challenge of finding packaging materials that serve the primary purpose of preserving products without adversely affecting the environment.
Wayne Witthöft, global marketing director at Diversey, says that alternative packaging could revolutionise the dairy industry and influence the value chain beyond packaging concepts. For example, packaging can facilitate positive changes in the business model and dairy supply chain. He emphasises, however, that any alternative packaging, especially for a product such as milk, should not compromise its purpose of preserving the product in favour of sustainability or cost-savings.
