The Second Act
Entrepreneur magazine|Autumn 2019
A passion that keeps you awake at night, pushes you out of your comfort zone and makes you do things you didn’t attempt before — exactly like your first love! Likewise, a handful of entrepreneurs too take up a fresh act from scratch after their baby venture. What inspired these entrepreneurs to tread on the same path twice is a captivating story — it was rather abridge they were creating with technology to disrupt the ecosystem.

The Second Act

Sumit Jain, Co-Founder and CEO, Opentalk, has always wanted to create a workplace where he can belong, solve problems and create value for stakeholders. As the world is increasingly getting connected through social media, we tend to become isolated than ever. And Jain clearly realized it when he discovered that there is a significant part of the world’s population who are seeking interactions with real people. The former Commonfloor.com co-founder decided to start his second venture after synergies for exploring other options with Quikr resulted in its acquisition of CommonFloor, his first entrepreneurial undertaking.

Another venture driven purely out of an innate passion to bring about a social impact is that of Yulu Bikes’ Co-Founder and CEO, Amit Gupta, who started his first venture InMobi in 2006. “My co-founders at InMobi valued entrepreneurship, supported me as angel investors and provided me office space. In 2018, Yulu was born as a solution and I worked aggressively to solve pollution and traffic concerns,” he recalls. For Gupta, this new venture helped him push boundaries. He fondly remembers, “I was on my own, making new connections, dealing with government authorities and bureaucrats whilst raising capital from seed and angel investors. It was a complete transformation as I shifted from a technology-based B2B start-up to an operation-based B2C model.”
