Dipka mine bags environmental clearance

The Environment, Forest and Climate Change ministry has sanctioned a 30-year environment clearance extension to Coal India’s Dipka coal mine in Chhattisgarh. The mine was had been submerged in a flood five months ago.

The 25 million tons a year open cast mine of South Eastern Coal Fields Ltd, one of India’s largest was recently in news for getting inundated by Lilanagar river in September which impacted Coal India’s output.

“The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC), after detailed deliberations duly considering observations of the Ministry’s Regional Office in their letter dated 27th November, 2019, recommended for continuance of the environmental clearance dated 20th March, 2019 for a period of 30 years or life of the mine, whichever is earlier, subject to the terms and conditions…,” read the minutes.

Last March, Dipka, which has a capacity of 25 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) and is spread over 1,999 hectares, was given a one-year environmental clearance which was to expire on March 20 this year.

The sanction was given during a meeting of the EAC for coal mining projects held on January 24 held at the environment, forest and climate change ministry in New Delhi.

Project proposals considered

Bharatpur OC expansion: deferred

The proposal was for amendment in environmental clearance dated October 31 of 2008 granted to Mahanadi Coalfields to Bharatpur opencast expansion project (15 mtpa to 20 mtpa) located in Talcher Coalfields of Odisha in mine lease area of 1386.20 ha.

The common safety zone between Bharatpur and Ananta OCPs which was proposed to be worked by Ananta OCP was regularized in the Ananta expansion project in 2014.

Similarly, the common safety zone between Bharatpur and Jagannath OCPs which was worked by Jagannath OCP was regularized in 2018.
