Sit At The Knee Of Our 2019 Legacy Award Honorees As They Share Hard-earned Wisdom

A Legacy Of Learning

CHAKA KHAN

PHILANTHROPY IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE AND ALSO BEING OF SERVICE.

We are not giving back. I am not giving back. I’m giving. We are here on this planet, I believe, to assist one another. That’s why we’re here.

I was a Black Panther. I started a children’s breakfast program and a church. I love kids. Kids are very important to me, and they keep me stable. I’d rather be in a room full of children than anywhere.

The thing that validates me is service. If you’re not doing that, there’s something missing, and you feel it.

CYNTHIA MARSHALL

FIND YOUR PASSION AND YOUR PURPOSE.

There are a whole lot of things going on in this world and people need us. We have skill sets, especially as African American women. We are strong, we are smart, we value family, we value togetherness, we value a lot of things that are missing in a lot of places. So know your worth. Be open to opportunities. Then cry and get busy. Cry like a baby.

What do I mean by that? There are some things that are going to happen in your career, there are things happening in our community, there are things that just make us sick. When I think about education, how many kids there are in foster care; how many of our men are in prison; I just have to cry.
