Best for lagoon / ‘combi’ conditions / multi sport

Naxos is a unique location with 2 sailing spots - an enclosed lagoon with shallow, flat water conditions suitable for slalom, freestyle, kids and lessons. The second, more advanced spot, has offshore swell and bump and jump. You can sail between both. The prevailing Meltemi wind blows from April to November, with peak months 15-25 knots+ for 70%+ days. The centre offers kit for beginners to high spec rental, free bikes, SUP, snorkelling, catamaran sailing plus instruction camps. The beach bar restaurants offer a la carte, BBQs and sociable bar, a few minutes’ walk from your accommodation. Or head into the historical old town, just a short walk for historic sights, shopping and many dining options.

Best for undiscovered / all levels / 3 bays

One of the most southerly of the Greek Islands, Karpathos is part of the Dodecanese, lying east of Crete and Rhodes. Relatively undiscovered by tourists, with beautiful deserted beaches, idyllic mountain villages and cosy tavernas with the main industries fishing and farming the olive groves. The Bay of Afriartis offers the perfect place to unwind except on the water. The 3 sailing spots – Gun Bay, Devils Bay and Chicken Bay offer a choice of wind strengths with flat water, speed track, increasing chop and wind waves depending on the location. The centre is sociable with options for mountain bikes tours and climbing.

Best for families / nightlife / multi sport

The Meltemi wind blows all summer with light force 2-3 winds in the morning, perfect for kids and beginners, with afternoons from force 4 to 7-8 in July and August. Sportif offer 3 spots on Kos giving a choice of style of hotel, conditions and prices. Kefalos is located on a picturesque, sandy bay, Mamari on the north coast and Psalidi near Kos town. As well as windsurfing, there is sailing, kitesurfing, mountain bikes and SUP. The island is scattered with historical sites and beautiful beaches, easily explored by car. For nightlife head to Kos town with winding streets, lined with shops, bars, restaurants and clubs.

Best for advanced / high wind/combi conditions

At the southern tip of Spain, facing the Straits of Gibraltar between Spain and Morocco, sits picturesque Tarifa, the ‘Capital City of Wind’. Valdevaqueros beach, on the western end of the wide 11 km sandy bay, has a sheltered spot for training and combi and advanced conditions, waves and bump and jump. Winds can reach force 8 on big days in July and August but you can also windsurf here from March to the end of November with less strong conditions. Nearby boutique hotels offer tennis, horse riding and yoga. The town is a collection of Moorish buildings and cobbled streets with many shops, restaurants and bars open late into the night, great for a short break.

Best for flat water/training/beginners

Alacati is ideal for all levels and ages wanting to improve their technique or enjoy the great slalom and freestyle conditions on an almost landlocked 10 km² bay. The season runs from April to October with the best wind from June to August with 70-80% days force 4+. Rent the latest NeilPryde and Fanatic boards and launch directly on the flat water, with shallow area for training. You can chill out in the bar restaurants with kids clubs at the centre plus volleyball, bike hire, yoga and stand up paddleboarding. Stay in local style boutique hotels, all-inclusive and luxury 5* beach hotels with local markets in old town Alacati and nearby historic sites and hot thermal pools.
