The driver shortage circulates the newsfeed constantly; we are anywhere between 40,000 and 70,000 drivers short, depending on which newspaper you read. It was the same in the mid-’70s when I was running around in short trousers. I can recall my dad moaning that the firm that he was a rep for couldn’t get drivers for love nor money. They were having to take on anyone with a licence and put them through the HGV test.
Ford D series
Fast forward to the latter part of the decade and my dad had set up on his own. It was on a small scale, doing light haulage and hurry-up work. The biggest thing he had was a Ford D series four-tonner but I couldn’t wait for Saturday mornings when I could go down to the yard with him.
