Andreas, the head honcho at Thunderbike in Hamminkeln, Germany, is a man who’s owned and/or built some of the most amazing customs in Europe – his/their bikes’ve won just about every award there is, in almost every style/genre you can think of. Their bikes do tend to be out-and-out customs, though, and one thing he was keen to do was a proper post-war bobber in the original style that, perhaps sadly, has been superseded by the new era of modern bobbers – bobbers were, after all, originally big ol’ Harleys and Indians stripped of all their extraneous metalwork in an effort to make them lighter, faster and more able to keep up with the much smaller, but more nimble, Triumphs, BSAs and Nortons that were imported into the States in the Fifties and Sixties. They were, if you like, originally more about speed and agility than looks – that came much later.

I’M A SEMI-PRO SHED BUILDER, WHO BUILDS UNDER THE NAME DIRTY DICK’S… I SAY ‘SEMIPRO’ BECAUSE I’VE ONLY, AT THE TIME OF WRITING, SOLD TWO BIKES (AND, USUALLY, I GET PAID IN BEER FOR ANY OTHER WORK I DO).

I BOUGHT MY ENFIELD, A 2001 350 BULLET, IN SHROPSHIRE IN JUNE 2019, WITH JUST 11,000 MILES ON THE CLOCK. IT WAS IN TRIALS TRIM, BUT I ALREADY HAD IN MY HEAD WHAT I WANTED TO DO WITH IT – MAKE IT INTO A ‘50S-STYLE CUSTOM, BASED LOOSELY AROUND AN INDIAN SCOUT THAT I’D SEEN PICTURES OF.
