After a quick soirée to the hospital, we (Luke and I) got the wreckage back to the unit where it stayed in the corner for the next couple of weeks while the insurance people did their thing. It turns out they didn’t know what to do about custom bikes, and didn’t have anyone to assess the damage, so I ended up assessing it and, after sending them some pictures, they wrote it off, giving me a chunk of cash and the salvage back on a Cat. C.
My bones got moderately better, life went on, and still the little ’Dream languished in the corner. Eventually we remembered it was there, and thought we’d drag it into the light to look at a rebuild. My thinking was to throw a new front end on it and Bob, apparently, would be my uncle, but the damage was a little more than I’d thought – the impact with the A8 (the Audi, not the road in Scotland) had bent the top-tube, and steering head, shifted the motor forward (breaking the frontmounts), and twisted the down-tubes and one side of the hardtail. Still don’t know how I walked away from that… Luke immediately went into mad nine-inch grinder mode and, before I had chance to say ‘What the f**k?’, cut the entire top off the frame – toptube, headstock, front rails, and the top of the hardtail. His attitude was, ‘We’re committed now, let’s kick on’.
