Bling!
Back Street Heroes|October 2020
PEOPLE WHO’VE BEEN INVOLVED IN THE CUSTOM SCENE COMMERCIALLY ARE OFTEN VERY GOOD AT TAKING ADVANTAGE OF TRENDS IN BIKE STYLES, AND ADAPTING THEM TO SUIT WHAT THEY DO BEST. TRIKE DESIGN, DOWN IN DEEPEST, DARKEST (WELL, SOMETIMES) WALES, ARE A CASE IN POINT…
NIK
Bling!

Back at the end of last year ex-NCC pres’ Hank, and the crew, down there decided they needed a new trike for the 2020 show season – one that’d not only be properly in-yer-face, but also a rolling advert for hat they can do. Seeking inspiration from magazines and the Internet, so that they didn’t do the same as everyone else, they noticed the surge of interest in baggers in the US, and how it was starting to filter over to the UK too, and decided to take certain cues from their styling and adapt them to both a trike, and also to a UK audience (we over here are a bit less into the kind of seriously OTT bling that a lot of US baggers sport, y’know).

A 2015 Sportster soon turned up at the right money, and so was bought to become the base for the new project. The back end was, of course, hoiked out almost immediately, and one of their proven IRS (independent rear suspension, not Inland Revenue Service) set ups fitted, along with a very clever reversing system (look down just below the seat on the right-hand side, and you’ll see a lever that lifts a brand new winch motor up to a cog which, at the press of a button, drives you backwards very gently). The redundant rear hoop’s been re-used in place of the skinny front wheel (trikes always ride better with a wider front wheel) that’s been converted to take twin discs (not an easy job), and slipped atwixt the legs of a pair of hybrid Fat Boy (lowers)/Street Bob (stanchions, 1.5” over stock length) forks held in a set of Billet Bike Bits’ slab yokes that’ve been made to Trike Designs’ Easy-Steer specifications, and so do exactly what the name says – make the trike steer really easily.

THE SLED

I’M A SEMI-PRO SHED BUILDER, WHO BUILDS UNDER THE NAME DIRTY DICK’S… I SAY ‘SEMIPRO’ BECAUSE I’VE ONLY, AT THE TIME OF WRITING, SOLD TWO BIKES (AND, USUALLY, I GET PAID IN BEER FOR ANY OTHER WORK I DO).

THE CHIEF

I BOUGHT MY ENFIELD, A 2001 350 BULLET, IN SHROPSHIRE IN JUNE 2019, WITH JUST 11,000 MILES ON THE CLOCK. IT WAS IN TRIALS TRIM, BUT I ALREADY HAD IN MY HEAD WHAT I WANTED TO DO WITH IT – MAKE IT INTO A ‘50S-STYLE CUSTOM, BASED LOOSELY AROUND AN INDIAN SCOUT THAT I’D SEEN PICTURES OF.

MADE O'GUBBINS

OVER THE LAST YEAR OR SO, MANY OF US’VE HAD TO FOREGO THE JOY OF SEARCHING FOR PARTS AT AUTO-JUMBLES, SHOWS AND BREAKER’S YARDS, RELYING ON EITHER THE HIT-AND-MISS OF INTERNET AUCTION SITES, OR TURNING TO OUR OWN STOCK OF PARTS, WHEN LOOKING AT BUILDING OR MODIFYING A BIKE.

I DECIDED I NEEDED A BIKE FOR MYSELF AS A KEEPER (RATHER THAN THE USUAL BUILD IT, SELL IT, FUND THE NEXT ONE), BUT TIME AND FUNDS WERE GOING TO GET TIGHT. I WANTED A ‘60S/’70S-STYLE HARDTAIL WITH A DECENT-SIZED MOTOR, SINGLE OR TWIN, AND SOMETHING I DIDN’T HAVE TO DO ANY FRAME MODIFICATIONS TO.

SOME FOLK SAY WORK’S A NECESSARY EVIL, OTHERS MAKE THE MOST OF THEIR SITUATION. A GOOD FRIEND ONCE SAID TO ME THAT IT’S THE LITTLE VICTORIES THAT COUNT WHEN AT WORK, USING THEIR MACHINERY TO MAKE BIKE PARTS, BLAGGING FREE STATIONARY, OR JUST HAVING A POO ON THEIR TIME…
