Feed electrolytes
“UNLIKE human sweat, horse sweat is hypertonic, which means that it contains a higher concentration of body salts, or electrolytes, than other fluids within the body,” explains Llinos Owen, nutritional advisor at Dodson & Horrell.
“These salts include sodium and chloride, which help to maintain blood volume; potassium and calcium, which is important for muscle function; and magnesium, an essential component of body fluids.
“Most compound feeds contain a base level of electrolytes, but it will not be enough to fulfill the requirement of horses in hard work, especially those working in warmer weather. Therefore, ensure your horse is receiving enough electrolytes in their daily ration based on their workload, especially sodium.
“Sodium stimulates the thirst mechanism and encourages horses to drink. If you need to feed additional electrolytes on hot days and/or in hard work, look for balanced options including the salts discussed.”
Add vits & mins
“SUMMER grass usually contains a great number of calories, potentially high levels of protein and good levels of vitamin E,” says Jennifer Little, registered nutritionist and thoroughbred and performance horse specialist at Dodson & Horrell. “It’s a common mistake to believe that horses are getting all the nutrients needed from grazing alone, especially if they are putting on weight.
