Samson shines, but Proteas hold nerve to take lead
The Morning Standard|October 07, 2022
A REARGUARD act from Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller helped South Africa to claim the rain-curtailed first ODI in Lucknow on Thursday. The unbeaten 139-run stand between the two finishers took Proteas to a commanding 249/4 in 40 overs. That total was always going to be challenging and so it proved as the hosts fell short by 9 runs.
Samson shines, but Proteas hold nerve to take lead

For a brief while, Sanju Samson and Shardul Thakur threatened with sixth-wicket stand of 93. But the asking rate proved to be too big in the end. From an Indian point of view, these ODIS lack meaning and have zero context. From a South African point of view, though, they need the wins badly as to qualify for next year's World Cup. It's why the Proteas are prioritising this series over acclimatising in Australia ahead of the T20 World Cup.
