Durban FilmMart continues to unite Africa, one story at a time at DIFF
July 22, 2025

KWAZULU-NATAL Tourism and Film Authority's (KZNTAFA) involvement in the film fraternity reflects a deeper vision - to elevate KwaZulu-Natal as a cinematic destination where stories are not only told, but truly come alive.
The Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) is therefore more than a festival; it is one of the three anchor pillars of Film Month activities in KwaZulu-Natal and is flanked by the Simon “Mabhunu” Sabela Awards and the Durban FilmMart.
Together, they form a powerful trilogy that showcases KZNTAFA’s commitment to developing talent, promoting transformation and positioning KZN as a world-class film destination.
This year’s edition of the Durban FilmMart (DFM) continued its mission to foster a thriving and dynamic African film industry. In a world that often feels increasingly divided, this is no small task. Yet the DFM has remained steadfast in its vision - breaking down barriers and building a more connected creative community across the continent.
In a time marked by deepening divisions, the Durban FilmMart Institute has remained steadfast in its purpose: to demystify and democratise African cinema. Now in its 16th year and themed “Bridges not borders: Stories that unite”, the DFM continues to champion a vision that celebrates diversity and nurtures creativity. Guided by a clear strategy, the DFM has established itself as a progressive pan-African platform dedicated to showcasing African talent and expertise on the global stage.
The DFM board and management have been intentional in driving this strategy forward, focusing on three core pillars:
◆ Pitch and Finance Forum - Carefully selected projects are given the opportunity to connect with potential investors and distributors.
◆ Networking and knowledge exchange - Through masterclasses, panel discussions and curated sessions, this platform supports creative growth and distribution opportunities.
◆ Industry development - By facilitating engagement with broadcasters, financiers and other key players, DFM helps filmmakers move their projects from development to production.

Transforming Trump's G20 snub into a strategic advantage for South Africa
THE announcement by US President Donald Trump that South Africa will be “uninvited” from the 2026 G20 Summit is, at face value, a diplomatic provocation. But beneath the headlines lies a far more consequential opportunity: the chance for South Africa - with its business leadership at the forefront - to redefine its global narrative, champion multilateralism and strengthen its position as a bridge between the West and the Global South.
