RAIL services on the Dartmoor Line between Okehampton and Exeter are to be doubled from tomorrow, after more than 50,000 journeys in the 20 weeks since it was reopened.
November's reopening came after nine months of restoration work, which was completed £10 million under budget. It turned a mothballed former freight railway into a regular passenger service for the first time in almost 50 years.
Part of the Government's £500m manifesto commitment to restore railways, the service is now being expanded to provide hourly trains.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: “The huge success of the Dartmoor Line shows that when you get the service right the public will respond with increased demand."
To reopen the line, Network Rail engineers laid 11 miles of new track.
