MACAULAY Gillesphey believes he is only going to get better as a defender because of his competition with Brendan Galloway for a first-team place at Plymouth Argyle.
The pair are good friends off the pitch but are battling it out to play on the left side of the Pilgrims' defensive trio, with Gillesphey starting five of the eight League One games so far this season and Galloway the other three.
Gillesphey returned to the team at the expense of Galloway for the clash against Oxford United at Home Park on Tuesday night and Argyle came out on top 1-0 after a 70th-minute goal from Morgan Whittaker.
It was Argyle's fourth consecutive home clean sheet in the league at the start of this season, and their 11th in the last 12 games since the beginning of March.
Gillesphey said: "For me, Brendan is a brilliant lad and a brilliant player. He's obviously pushing me on to try and be as best as I can.
