Netanyahu faces new pressure to let more aid into Gaza as talks on hostages continue
The Guardian|May 02, 2024
Israel's leaders were under renewed pressure to allow more aid into Gaza yesterday, after the US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, told Benjamin Netanyahu to "accelerate and sustain improvements" in the amount of humanitarian assistance reaching the territory.

Humanitarian agencies say that though the number of trucks entering Gaza after being vetted by Israel has increased significantly, these only deliver a fraction of what is needed.

Blinken had "reiterated the importance of accelerating and sustaining that improvement" in a two-hour meeting in Jerusalem with the Israeli prime minister, said Matthew Miller, a state department spokesperson.

Israel reopened the Erez crossing yesterday, the sole crossing on the northern edge of the Gaza Strip, after months of requests from international aid agencies, while the US is building an offshore pier to allow deliveries of aid by sea.

Goods are now arriving via the port of Ashdod, just a short drive from the devastated territory.

This week the UN secretary general, António Guterres, said there had been incremental progress toward averting "an entirely preventable, human-made famine" in the northern Gaza Strip, but called on Israel to do more.
