Iran Upholds One-Year Jail Term for Filmmaker Jafar Panahi

Acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi has suffered a legal setback after an Iranian court upheld a oneyear prison sentence against him following a retrial linked to charges of "propaganda activity against the regime."

According to reports, Judge Iman Afshari of Tehran's Revolutionary Court rejected objections raised by Panahi's legal team and reaffirmed the earlier verdict, which had been issued in the filmmaker's absence.
Panahi's lawyer, Mostafa Nili, said the court maintained the sentence over allegations related to the production of an "underground and problematic film against the establishment." Under the original ruling, Panahi was sentenced to one year in prison on charges of engaging in propaganda against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
