India's retail inflation softens to 4.87 per cent in October

Amid significant headwinds, India’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) led retail inflation dropped to 4.87 per cent in October 2023, on account of softening food prices. The retracing of the inflation below 5 per cent, was on expected lines.
The Reserve Bank of India, in its monthly economic report in October noted that food inflation has eased and that headline inflation was 5 per cent in September, within the upper tolerance limit of inflation targeting, which, according to RBI, indicates that the increase in inflation during July-August was only temporary, caused by seasonal and weather-driven supply constraints in a few food items. The government has mandated the RBI to ensure the CPI inflation remains at 4 per cent.
