I can't keep up with car payments

I have a car on a hire purchase agreement but have lost my job and am not going to be able to keep up with payments.

I can manage without the car but I was only 20 months into a four-year agreement and am worried that I will be hit for a large sum if I give the car back. Can you advise?

It's usually better for people in your position to give the vehicle (or goods) back voluntarily before you get a default notice. You should tell the lender it's a 'voluntary termination!
